Pedal power, pint-sized and fuel efficient cars get motorists' attention

Dentist William Salmons is selling his Hummer. Retired businessman Herb Jacobs bought an ultra-small fuel-efficient import and University of Tennessee graduate student Adam Stoermer pedals a commuter bike to campus.
These are some of the ways Knoxville-area motorists are conserving fuel in the wake of rising gasoline prices.
Herb Jacobs of Knoxville says he’s used to the attention from curious onlookers like Melton Brown of Cleveland, Tenn., as he fills his tank. Brown said he thought the car "was a cute little thing." Despite its compact appearance, Jacobs says his Smart car has adequate room to be comfortable. Although popular in Europe, the car is just starting to be seen in the United States.
