Big companies, like Walmart, McDonald's and Starbucks, tend to suck the life out of the historic downtowns in communities across North America. Alexandria, Minnesota is a fine example of what can be done to fight back and stem the tide of chains and franchises. Its main street is lined with antique sellers, book stores and specialty shops. We spent a pleasant time browsing and chatting with the locals. Their train station (below) has been turned into a lovely eatery and a bike trail, that runs from St Cloud to Fergus Falls, goes by its doors along the shore of Lake Agnes.
