'Dieter Zetsche, Daimler-Chrysler's designated chief executive officer, expressed confidence in the future of the loss-making Smart car as he took control of Mercedes Car Group last week.
"I am extraordinarily optimistic that Mercedes Car Group is on a fast track...I am equally optimistic that we will make progress with Smart along the way," he said from the company's Frankfurt Germany head office.'
'Some analysts suggest pulling the plug on Smart, which has not made a profit since its 1998 debut and is slated to break even in 2007, despite job cuts and narrowing of the city car's model lineup. It lost nearly 4,000 euros on each car sold last year.'
